Atlanta Mom Says UPS Lost Her Son’s Ashes, Offered $135 as Compensation

After delivering her son Deontray’s ashes from a local UPS store to a family member and the ashes not arriving, Atlanta mother Tangenika Lee felt like she had lost her child again.

Her 15-year-old son overdosed on fentanyl in 2020, and in early January, she delivered his ashes to her sister, a cremation urn maker in Connecticut, after his cremation. But weeks passed, and the ashes—which were supposed to be at her sister’s house by a specific time—never arrived.

Lee told WSBTV.”I cremated him so he could be right here with me, traveling and doing things together. “And he’s not here.”

The heartbroken mother revealed that she shipped gifts and ashes from the Hiram UPS store. She explained to the personnel what was inside the wooden box. When the ashes did not arrive, she returned to investigate what had occurred. The cops were also present, she stated.

“They returned to the store and pulled CCTV from January 8th, and they informed me that the box had indeed left their facility; there was nothing they could do about it. “I just lost it and started crying,” she explained.

Despite receiving a $135 cheque from corporate customer service for lost ashes, she chose not to pay it.

Lee reported that the ashes were traced to a distribution center in Connecticut. She indicated that she will go there herself to look for her son’s remains.

UPS contacted Channel 2’s Tom Regan, explaining that “given the time limits we had to examine, we discovered the content of the item was declared by the client as ‘clothing.’ UPS will not accept shipments of human remains. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and keep them in our thoughts at this difficult time. Unfortunately, the shipment got misplaced.”
