Nyesha Stone, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduate, is once again providing funding to a Milwaukee resident who enjoys writing about travel.
On April 17, Carvd N Stone, Stone’s media company, will open applications for the second annual Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship. The winner of this scholarship will receive $1,000.
Martin “Marty” Hintz passed away in 2020. For many years, he ran the Irish American Post newspaper from an office in the city’s Third Ward. Hintz was a travel writer, reporter, and publisher who spent his entire life on the road.
Prior to his death, Hintz connected with Stone through local journalism groups and was impressed by her work. After his passing, Hintz’s son, Steve, reached out to Stone about setting up a scholarship surrounding Marty Hintz’s love of travel.
This year, all applicants have to submit an 800-word essay answering the question: “If you could travel to one place you’ve never been, where would it be and why?”
Last year’s winner, Morgan Coleman, answered the question: “What is your favorite traveling experience and why?”
Coleman applied while a senior at Drake University. She had traveled extensively throughout Europe and participated in a study abroad program during her undergraduate studies. She knew she had the credentials to submit an application, and she also knew she needed the money, with graduate school on the horizon and application fees piling up.
“I knew that I would have to pay for graduate school applications and those can get pretty expensive,” Coleman said, adding she also requested the funding for moving expenses back to her hometown of Milwaukee from Iowa, where Drake is located.
Stone said herself and another judge selected Coleman because of how well-written the essay was. “You can tell she took her time and she really told a story that was rememberable,” Stone said.
Coleman works for Milwaukee Public Schools in the Department of Gender and Identity Inclusion, but will be moving west in the fall to attend the University of Minnesota.

Here’s how to apply
This year’s applicant doesn’t have to have extensive travel experience like Coleman, but should be able to answer where they’d like to travel to.
Applicants do not need to be in an academic program to receive the scholarship.
To be eligible for the scholarship you must be a Milwaukee resident and be between the ages of 17 and 29.
Applications open at 9 a.m. on April 17. To apply for the CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship, visit carvdnstone.com. Applications will close on May 17 at noon.
