Nickecoy Bramwell of Jamaica broke Usain Bolt’s Under-17s 400m world record from 2002. The most recent record holder, a 16-year-old kid, achieved this accomplishment while recovering from various injuries, including a longstanding hamstring problem, at the Carifta Games at Grenada’s Kirani James Athletics Stadium.
He finished the race in 47.26 seconds, slightly faster than Bolt’s record-breaking 47.33 seconds. Bramwell said, “It’s a great feeling to beat the record. I’ve been eyeing the record since last summer.
“It’s a nice feeling knowing I can come out here and get it. According to the Mirror, the individual stated, “I just took my mind off it and focused on the record.”
According to Sportskeeda, the Calabar High School student established a personal best of 46.75 in the 400-meter sprint on January 20 during a school competition, prior to his current success. He also established a new personal best in the 100 meters that day, clocking 10.94 seconds.
Less than a month later, the youthful prodigy set a new 200-meter record of 21.45 in Kingston’s National Stadium. His performance was impressive enough to earn him a gold medal in the Class 2 Finals of the Corporate Area Development Meet, where he competed.
In 2024, Bramwell won multiple medals, including first place in the 200-meter Finals 2 of the OnDiRun / JC Sprint Fest 200 and gold in the 100- and 400-meter finals of the Class 2 McKenley/Wint Invitational Meet, highlighting his competitive ability.
The 16-year-old won gold in the 400 meters in the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships and the Youngster Goldsmith National Athletic Classic.
Bolt, the eight-time Olympic gold medalist, still holds the world record for the fastest 100-meter sprint, achieved in 2009 with a pace of 9.58 seconds.
He was largely regarded as the greatest sprinter of all time before retiring in 2017.
