Magnitude 5.1 Quake Hits Sea South Of Istanbul

On Monday, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck just south of Istanbul, trembling areas of the country’s largest metropolis but causing no apparent injuries or damage.

According to the AFAD emergency agency, the earthquake’s epicentre occurred in the Marmara Sea’s Gemlik Bay, which is roughly 60 kilometers (35 miles) south of Istanbul, near the city of Bursa.

Walls shook on both the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, according to AFP correspondents, with television footage showing people walking out onto the street for protection.

Turkey’s most populous city is located along the North Anatolian Fault, one of the world’s most active.

In 1999, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake with an epicentre on the city’s eastern suburbs killed almost 17,000 people.

Since then, the population of Istanbul has almost doubled to 16 million people.

In February, two large earthquakes killed over 50,000 people in southeastern Turkey, damaging or destroying tens of thousands of buildings across multiple cities.
