Former television journalist Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos’s future wife, has stated that marrying one of the world’s wealthiest men will provide her with “good opportunities.”
When the Amazon founder proposed to Sánchez in May, they kept it low-key – with the exception of the $2.5 million pink diamond ring.
In a new interview with Vogue, Sánchez was asked if there are any duties that come with marrying Bezos, the world’s third wealthiest person.
“We always look at each other and go, ‘We’re the team.’ So everything’s shared.”
Sánchez, a former American TV journalist and helicopter pilot, recalled the day Bezos proposed to her. After a starlit dinner for two on Koru, the billionaire’s three-master $500 million megayacht, Sánchez discovered the ring under her pillow in May. The yacht is the world’s tallest sailing boat.
“When he opened the box, I think I blacked out a bit,” she told Vogue, adding that the proposal was so unexpected that she had already removed her make-up and was ready to go to bed.
“We’re still thinking about the wedding,” she added. “What it’s going to be. Is it going to be big? Is it going to be overseas? We don’t know yet. We’ve only been engaged five months!”
Bezos, 59, said he will not be taking an active role in planning the nuptials. “Oh, God, no,” he said. “Do I look that dumb?
Sánchez also stated in the interview that she was convinced she would take her husband’s surname.
“Uh, yes, 100 per cent,” she told the publication. “I am looking forward to being Mrs Bezos.”
Sánchez has embraced her status as one of the world’s most high-profile spouses, and she routinely rubs shoulders with Hollywood A-Listers. She is also in a WhatsApp group chat with Kris Jenner of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and other undisclosed celebs, and she is a close friend of Kim Kardashian.
Sánchez and Bezos’ romance became public in January 2019, around the time Bezos announced his divorce from Mackenzie Scott, his wife of 25 years, in a joint announcement on Twitter/X. The ex-couple has four kids: three sons and one daughter.
Meanwhile, the Good Day Los Angeles co-host was divorcing her spouse of 13 years, Patrick Whitesell. Sánchez has two children from her marriage to Whitesell, as well as a son from a previous relationship with retired NFL player Tony Gonzalez.
Sánchez and Bezos were featured on the front page of the National Enquirer in January 2019, prompting Bezos to criticize the newspaper. Following then, the couple finalized their divorces.
Sánchez has subsequently left journalism to pursue charitable endeavors. She told Vogue that she is particularly interested in the Bezos Earth Fund’s $10 billion commitment to “climate solutions,” as well as the Bezos Academy, a network of tuition-free preschools.
Sánchez claims that the pair uses green aviation fuel wherever possible, and that their yacht Koru can sail entirely on wind power.
“I think Jeff and I really are focusing on the long-term commitment to climate, and we’re extremely optimistic about it,” Sánchez said. “Ten billion is just the beginning.”
“This is the most important work I’ve ever done, ever,” she told the publication of her philanthropic efforts.
