Get to Know Patricia Cuffie-Jones, the Black Woman Producing and Directing More Than 10 Films for BET, Netflix, and Tubi

Patricia Cuffie-Jones is creating a name for herself as a filmmaker and producer in Hollywood, despite a lack of public recognition. For more than two decades, she has amassed an amazing portfolio on platforms including BET, Netflix, TV One, Bounce TV, Tubi, and the Hallmark Channel.

In an industry where Black women’s possibilities are generally limited, Cuffie-Jones has bucked the odds by directing and producing over ten films and television shows. China Ann McClain, Romeo Miller, Richard Pryor Jr., and Rain Pryor star in her latest piece, “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas,” which will premiere on BET+.

Cuffie-Jones, a Baltimore native and graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, developed her passion for storytelling in theater at the age of 14. She started Diverge Entertainment with her husband, Jeffrey Jones, after pursuing her passion for writing, directing, and producing in television and movies.

The production firm seeks to challenge society norms while promoting love, faith, and resilience. Cuffie-Jones has built a name for herself with films like “A Wesley Christmas” (2022) and “Favorite Son” (2021), yet many audiences are unaware of her involvement in these significant efforts.

Cuffie-Jones is known for her ability to combine entertaining and social critique. Her repertoire includes uplifting holiday films like “The First Noelle” (2022) and frightening thrillers like “Game of Deceit” (2023). Her hands-on approach guarantees that the storylines she creates reflect the intricacies of actual life.

This commitment to real storytelling garnered her five NAACP Theatre Award nominations for “Love Soul Deep,” a period piece set between the 1930s and the 1970s.

However, her experience in Hollywood has not been without hurdles. Cuffie-Jones endured multiple rejections early in her career, as typical industry gatekeepers frequently overlooked her work. Instead of waiting for permission, she took matters into her own hands by self-funding and “greenlighting” her projects. This entrepreneurial mentality has been crucial to her career, allowing her to create important material on her own terms.

“I learned early on that waiting for someone else to give you permission to create is not the way to succeed,” Cuffie-Jones said in an interview. “You have to be willing to bet on yourself, even when others won’t.”

Her confidence in herself has helped her succeed in a challenging industry for women of color. Despite the long hours and hard labor involved in each project, she emphasizes the necessity of balance. Cuffie-Jones praises her spouse and children for helping her maintain a balance between her home and professional lives. Despite her hectic work, she prioritizes family time for her well-being. She understands that the entertainment world is ephemeral, but family is eternal.

Cuffie-Jones’ impact extends beyond her own initiatives. She is also dedicated to making room for other marginalized voices in Hollywood, and she continues to push boundaries to ensure that her stories reach viewers hungry for true and diverse storylines.

Cuffie-Jones’ upcoming projects include several Christmas flicks and a BET thriller. With each new venture, she is determined to create content that not only entertains but also inspires and challenges audiences.

Patricia Cuffie-Jones’ success in Hollywood demonstrates how skill, tenacity, and a willingness to break the mold can lead to success in an industry where different voices are more important.
