6 Scholarships in New Zealand for International Students 2024-2025

Would you like to study in New Zealand for free? The New Zealand government and various New Zealand universities offer a number of scholarships to international students who wish to study in New Zealand. To assist you, HowAfrica compiled a list of the top New Zealand International Scholarships.

1. Manaaki New Zealand International Scholarships

The New Zealand Government provides full tertiary scholarships to eligible international students studying full-time at a New Zealand education institution or a Pacific university. Scholarships are available to nationals of selected Pacific, African, Asian, Latin American, and Caribbean nations. The scholarships include full tuition fees, a living allowance (NZ$531 per week), an establishment allowance (NZ$3000), medical and travel insurance, travel to and from your home country and New Zealand at the beginning and end of your scholarship, travel home during your scholarship, and assistance with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students.

 

2. Tongarewa Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University of Wellington is offering the Tongarewa Scholarship to commemorate the university’s commitment to its international student community. Eligible applicants are individuals starting their first year of an undergraduate degree or enrolling in a postgraduate degree program at Victoria University of Wellington. Recipients are expected to serve as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and to participate in appropriate events or marketing as requested. There are up to ten NZ$10,000 scholarships available for Bachelor’s and Masters degrees, as well as nine NZ$5,000 scholarships for Masters degrees exclusively.

 

3. University of Otago International Research Masters Scholarships

The University of Otago International Master’s Award provides assistance for international students pursuing a thesis-based Masters Degree at the University of Otago. The scholarship comprises an annual salary of NZ$17,172 and a tuition price waiver for one year, capped at the domestic rate for Master’s studies (excluding student services fees and insurance).

 

4. University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship

The University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship is available to new international undergraduate and postgraduate students applying to study taught PGDip or Masters of 120 points or more, as well as undergraduate degrees (with overseas secondary or post-secondary qualifications). Studies can be on any subject. The Scholarship’s primary goal is to recruit new overseas students of high caliber to enroll in undergraduate or postgraduate taught programs lasting one year or more at the University of Auckland. Up to 50 scholarships will be offered biannually (depending on whether the candidate begins studies in Semester 1 or Semester 2), with each scholarship worth up to $10,000 for postgraduate and undergraduate education.

 

5. University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarships 

The scholarships are intended for bright overseas students who have excelled academically and have the ability to serve as worldwide ambassadors for the University of Waikato. Applicants must be planning to enroll at the University of Waikato for the first time in either an undergraduate or postgraduate program. The scholarship covers up to NZ$10,000 in tuition fees.

 

6. 180-credit Taught Master’s Merit Scholarship at Lincoln University

Lincoln University provides scholarships of NZ$7,000 and NZ$10,000 to qualified international students pursuing one of the 180 credit taught master’s degrees.
