Governments in developed countries, including the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, and Europe, provide government-funded scholarships to outstanding international students as part of their commitment to international development cooperation and education system internationalization.
1. United States Government Scholarships
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program
The Fulbright Program provides complete scholarships for international students from 155 countries who want to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree in the United States. Scholarships can also be given for non-degree postgraduate courses. The grant includes tuition, textbooks, air travel, a living stipend, and health insurance.Each year, over 1,800 scholarships are offered.
- Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program
The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program offers a year of professional development in the United States to experienced professionals from selected nations around the world. Tuition, allowance, accident and health insurance, travel expenses, and other benefits are included in the fellowship.Approximately 200 fellowships are awarded each year.
2. British Commonwealth Government Scholarships
- British Chevening Scholarships
Chevening Scholarships, the UK government’s global scholarship programme, are offered to excellent scholars from Chevening-eligible nations worldwide.Awards are typically for one-year Master’s degrees. Most Chevening Scholarships cover education, a fixed-rate living stipend (for one person), economy class return flights to the UK, and supplementary funds to meet necessary expenses.Globally, over 1500 scholarships are being offered.
- UK Commonwealth Scholarships for Developing Commonwealth Countries
The Commonwealth Scholarships are meant for students from developing Commonwealth countries who wish to pursue Master’s and PhD studies in the United Kingdom. Each scholarship covers airfare to and from the United Kingdom, tuition and examination fees, personal living expenses, thesis grants (if applicable), and an initial arrival allowance, among other things. Every year, approximately 300 of these scholarships are awarded.
3. European Government Scholarships
The Netherlands
- Holland Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students
The Holland Scholarship, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, is for international students outside the European Economic Area (EEA) seeking to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree at a Dutch research university or university of applied sciences in Holland.The scholarship amounts to €5,000.
Belgium
- Government of Flanders Master Mind Scholarships for International Students
The Flanders government has launched a new scholarship program called Master Mind Scholarships, which aims to encourage the internationalization of Flemish higher education. It provides up to 45 scholarships to excellent Master’s students from all across the world. The new student is offered a scholarship of up to €8,000 each school year. The Flemish Host Institution may charge the applicant a maximum tuition price of €109 per year.
- VLIR-UOS awards scholarships
VLIR-UOS provides scholarships to students from 31 poor countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to study English-taught training or master’s programs in development at Belgian universities. The scholarships include tuition, housing, allowance, travel expenses, and other program-related expenses.
Germany
- DAAD Scholarships for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships for a variety of postgraduate courses at German universities that are particularly relevant to developing nations. The scholarships are designed primarily for international students and young professionals from developing nations in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Central and South America, and Central and Eastern Europe. The DAAD scholarship provides full or partial funding to chosen programmes.
Switzerland
- Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships allow graduates from approximately 180 countries to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in any academic discipline at a publicly financed university or recognized institution in Switzerland. The scholarship covers a monthly allowance, tuition, health insurance, accommodation, and other expenses.
Sweden
- Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professional
The Swedish Institute offers scholarships in Sweden to highly qualified overseas students from poor countries who wish to study full-time Masters degrees at Swedish universities. The scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, a travel allowance, and insurance. About 335 scholarships are available.
Denmark
- Danish Government Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students
The Danish Ministry of Education offers a number of scholarships each year to highly qualified and motivated international students from outside the EU/EEA who aspire to attend full-degree higher education programs at participating Danish universities. The scholarship might be in the form of full or partial tuition exemptions, as well as grants to cover living expenses.
Italy
- Italian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students
The Italian government provides scholarships for study in Italy to both foreign residents and Italian citizens living abroad. Scholarships are available for university degree courses, advanced vocational training, art and music courses, master’s degrees, PhD programs, and so on. Scholarships are only available for three, six, or nine months.
France
- Eiffel Excellence Scholarships
The Eiffel scholarship program was created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help French higher education institutions attract the brightest international students for master’s and PhD degree programs. Eiffel scholarship recipients receive a monthly allowance as well as reimbursement for expenses such as travel, health insurance, and cultural events. It does not include tuition expenses.
