Willow Camille Reign Smith, better known by her stage name WILLOW, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. On October 31, 2000, in Los Angeles, California, to actor parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.


Willow’s background and upbringing have always been in the spotlight due to her parents’ work and popularity. Willow played Marley, the on-screen daughter of her father, Will Smith’s character Robert Neville, in the film I Am Legend when she was six years old (2007). Willow starred as Countee Garby in the 2008 film Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. Willow became a recording artist in October 2010, when her debut single, “Whip My Hair,” written by Ronald Jackson and Janae Luann Ratliff, was released on the Roc Nation record label.

She was the label’s youngest artist at the time of her signing with the label, which was founded by Shawn Carter, better known as Jay Z. The song’s online premiere was hosted by Vevo, and it debuted on television when she appeared as a guest star on the show 106 & Park.

Willow explained how the song came to be in a 2010 Billboard interview. “When I wrote ‘Whip My Hair,’ I didn’t realize how significant it was because I was just expressing my joy.” “I was simply expressing myself.” She was reacting to the fact that “Whip My Hair” had become a song of empowerment for many young women who struggled with hair styling.

The song was a smash hit, reaching number five on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number two in the United Kingdom, making her debut single a worldwide success. Whip My Hair was nominated for Video of the Year, Young Stars Award, and Outstanding Music Video at the NAACP Image Awards in 2011. In 2011, it also received the Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award.

Willow now co-hosts “Red Table Talk” on the social media network Meta with her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith (also known as Facebook). That show earned her NAACP Image Award and Daytime Emmy nominations. She was also named Entertainer of the Year for Red Table Talk at the EBONY Power 100 Awards on October 23, 2021, alongside Jada Pinkett Smith (her mother) and Adrienne Banfield Norris (her grandmother). She was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2021, as well as one of Billboard’s Greatest Pop Stars of 2021. She has also been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2022.

Despite the success of “Whip My Hair” in 2010, Willow decided to take a year off from music to pursue other interests. She did return to music and released three albums between 2011 and 2020: Ardipithecus (2015), The 1st (2017), and Willow (2019). She will release her fourth album, Lately I Feel Everything, on July 16, 2021.
