Selena Gomez, a US singer, has explained why she took a sabbatical from music.
The 32-year-old Texas native has been off the music spotlight since releasing a single in February.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez revealed that she took a break from music to prepare for her role in the Spanish musical ‘Emilia Perez’.
The pop star also revealed that she continuously rehearsed her lines for the film.
“I stopped working on my music and anything else, and solely focused on this musical,” she said.
“Every day I’d wake up and rehearse the lines over and over again. And I’d call in the middle of the night, my Spanish teacher. That part was probably the most daunting, but it was also fun.”
The singer spoke after the Telluride Film Festival’s North American premiere of the film.
‘Emilia Perez’ follows the story of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their happiness.
Gomez is one of the three principal stars of the musical — alongside Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón.
“Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness,” the synopsis reads.
“The fearsome cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.”
The film, in which Gomez stars as Jessi, will be released in select theaters on November 1 and Netflix on November 13.
