Tyla, a South African singer, earned her first Grammy Award for ‘Best African Music Performance’ with her song ‘Water’.
The songwriter beat out other African nominees, including Olamide and Asake for ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy for ‘City Boys,’ Davido for ‘Unavailable,’ and Ayra Starr for ‘Rush’.
Davido and Burna Boy did not win any of their categories at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
The ‘Assurance’ singer, who is a first-time Grammy candidate, received nominations in three categories.
Tyla’s ‘Water’ won the ‘Best African Music’ category, while Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain’s ‘Pashto’ with Rakesh Chaurasia won ‘Best Global Music Performance’ and Shakti’s ‘The Moment’ won ‘Best Global Album’.
Burna Boy received nominations in four categories but did not win any of them.
The ‘Twice as Tall’ hitmaker lost the ‘Best African Music’ category to Tyla’s ‘Water’ and ‘Best Global Music Performance’ to ‘Pashto’ by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain starring Rakesh Chaurasia.
Shakti’s ‘The Moment’ album was named ‘Best Global Album’, while Lil Durk’s ‘All My Life’ starring J Cole received ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’.
The 2024 Grammy premiere ceremony began early Monday morning and is taking place at the Peacock Theatre.
