South Africa Tops Africa’s List For Major Meetings Destinations

The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has announced its 2024 rating of the most popular destinations for big events in 2023. The report, which was published on May 13, 2024, named South Africa the most popular site for major meetings in 2023.

ICCA’s Africa Geographical Ranking places South Africa first, followed by Rwanda, Kenya, Egypt, and Uganda as the top five sites for significant meetings in 2023. Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Niger rounded out the top ten African countries.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest market, was listed as the 14th most popular site for important meetings in 2023. The ICCA emphasized that, while geographical divisions serve administrative functions, they may not always reflect regions’ collective interests and potential.

Senthil Gopinath, CEO of ICCA, commented on the study, stating that the ICCA staff analyzed all of the meetings provided by members, resulting in a report that includes over 10,000 meetings for calendar year 2023.

“Our research team has done an excellent job accumulating this extensive data. It’s a pillar of our organization, giving essential insights that empower our members and strengthen our community’s strategic position.”

Gopinath stressed the significance of these rankings, saying, “International meetings and events can bring positive outcomes to all corners of the globe, and ICCA looks forward to continuing its role as a vehicle for change.”

To encourage collaboration and increase the visibility of specific regions on the international stage, the ICCA implemented a new ranking system that distinguishes geographical regions from ICCA Chapter Regions. The rankings are based on the 2023 ICCA Business Analytics Country and City Rankings report.
