Natalie Portman and Garca Bernal were romantically involved. With Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi, he has a son named Lázaro (born 2009), as well as a daughter named Libertad (born 2011). The partnership between Garca Bernal and Fonzi dissolved in 2014.

In 2021, Garca Bernal and Fernanda Aragonés had a new baby.
