Côte d’Ivoire Players Given Bonuses, Villas For AFCON Triumph

Côte d’Ivoire players and coach Emerse Fae received bonus payments and villas during a presidential ceremony on Tuesday to commemorate their Africa Cup of Nations success as hosts.

The Ivorians defeated Nigeria 2-1 in Sunday’s final to win the continental title for the third time.

Each member of the squad received 50 million CFA francs ($82,152) and a villa of equal value.

Coach Fae was awarded 100 million CFA francs for orchestrating a spectacular recovery after replacing ousted Jean-Louis Gasset midway through the tournament, following a 4-0 group-stage defeat by Equatorial Guinea.

“You have brought happiness to all Ivorians, bravo,” exclaimed Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara.

The players were also granted the national order, the highest public honor in the country.
