China Congratulates Venezuela’s Maduro On Re-Election

China congratulated Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on his re-election on Monday, following a referendum in which the country’s opposition and important regional governments instantly rejected the official results.

“China congratulates Venezuela for smoothly holding its presidential election and congratulates President Maduro on his successful re-election,” foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a regular briefing.

“China stands ready to enrich our all-weather strategic partnership and better benefit the peoples of both countries,” he said.

“China and Venezuela are good friends and partners who support each other,” he added.

Beijing is Venezuela’s primary creditor and maintains tight connections with the politically isolated, inflation-ravaged communist country.

In September, Maduro visited China, where he met with President Xi Jinping and declared that the “historic” visit was intended at “strengthening cooperation and the construction of a new world order”.

The Venezuelan leader was declared the winner of Sunday’s presidential election, receiving 51.2% of the vote.

However, Venezuela’s opposition coalition insisted on receiving 70% of the vote, rejecting numbers from Maduro’s loyalist election commission.
