Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was sentenced to ten years in prison on Tuesday for shooting musician Megan Thee Stallion. Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion in the feet after the two got into a disagreement after leaving a pool party at reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood residence in July 2020.
Lanez has been imprisoned since December after being convicted on three gun-related offences. Lanez was found guilty of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possessing a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and negligently discharging a firearm.
Prosecutors sought a severe sentence, claiming Lanez shot a “vulnerable victim” and then launched “a campaign to humiliate and re-traumatize her” after the incident. Lanez’s attorneys stated that he intends to appeal.
Following the shooting, Megan Thee Stallion had to have surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot. Lanez apologized to the court before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford handed down his sentence on Tuesday.
“If I could change it, I would, but I can’t. Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” he added. “I truly am just trying to be a better person.”
