An 11-year-old boy who heroically raced back to their burning Salisbury, Maryland apartment to save his 2-year-old sister said he would have been angry with himself if he hadn’t tried to save her.

According to 11Alive, Laprentis Doughty, 11, originally fled the residence after the fire broke out on November 22. But when he discovered his sister was still imprisoned inside, he hurried back to save her.

“If I didn’t save my sister, I’d be upset with myself because I could have easily saved her.” “I could have rescued her, and I would put my life on the line for my sister,” Doughty added. According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire at the two-story apartment building was started by an electrical problem. Doughty left the building after the fire erupted, but he returned to save his sister. At the time, the 2-year-old was on the second floor.

According to authorities, Doughty suffered minor burns on his arm while escorting his sister out of the flat. And because his burns were minor, he did not require immediate medical attention. Salisbury Mayor Jake Days hailed Doughty for his bravery and heroism. “As a mayor, I’m always searching for selfless citizens, folks willing to lead, and we’ve got one right here,” Days says.

GoFundMe has since been created to help raise funds for the family. “My son rescued his baby sister from our apartment that caught fire due to electrical issues in [sic] result we lost everything except for the clothes that we had on our backs,” the GoFundMe said. “In [sic] am grateful that my children are alive and breathing.”
