Adele, a British singer-songwriter, has sold millions of albums worldwide and is best known for her hits “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” and “Hello.” Months after graduating from a performing arts school near London, the young star signed a record deal at the age of 18. Adele won the 2009 Grammy for Best New Artist, following her 2008 debut album, 19. Her subsequent albums have been enormous commercial hits, including the most recent release, 30 in November 2021. The musical powerhouse has 16 Grammys and one Oscar, and is the only musician to win the top three categories (album, song, and record of the year) twice. Adele is currently doing a Las Vegas residency, that began in November 2022.

Early Life

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born May 5, 1988, in North London, England. Adele is the sole child of Penny Adkins, a “arty mom” who was only 18 at the time of her birth, and her Welsh father, Mark Evans, who abandoned the family when Adele was four years old.

Evans maintained communication with his daughter until she reached adolescence, when his alcoholism and growing distance from her strained their relationship. Adele, on the other hand, grew close to her mother, who encouraged her young daughter “to explore, and not to stick with one thing.”

Adele had a strong interest in music from an early age. She preferred music by Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, and Destiny’s Child. When she was 15, she discovered a collection of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald albums at a local shop, which had a profound impact on her.

In a 2008 interview with The Telegraph, Adele stated that her family did not have any musical tradition. “Chart music was all I knew.” So when I listened to the Ettas and Ellas, it seemed corny, but it was like a revelation. I was thinking, “Oh, right, some people have true longevity and are legends.” I was so motivated that as a 15-year-old, I was listening to music from the 1940s.

Adele was definitely clever, but she was not suited to regular educational environments. Instead, her mother enrolled her in the Brit School for Creative & Performing Arts, whose alumni include actor Tom Holland and late singer Amy Winehouse. Adele recorded a three-track demo for a class project, which she later released to her MySpace profile. When executives at XL Recordings heard the tunes, they contacted Adele and signed the 18-year-old to a record deal in November 2006, just four months after she graduated.

Years into her career, the singer reconciled with her father in early 2021, while he faced a recurrence of cancer.Adele said to Rolling Stone that she and her partner discussed their relationship openly and even performed songs from her new album for him. Evans died in May. “I don’t think I understood the true deepness of how I felt about my dad until we spoke,” she told me. “It was as if I let out one howl and something vanished [with his death]. I’ve been so relaxed since then. It truly did set tiny me free.

Adele has released four albums, beginning with 2008’s 19. Her CDs are titled after the ages at which she began recording each endeavor. Albums 21 and 25 were named Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Top Songs

Adele’s debut album’s lead hit, “Chasing Pavements,” was the first of her songs to chart in the UK and the US. The singer claims she penned the song following an incident with her then-boyfriend in a London bar. “It was six in the morning. There was no one chasing me, and I was not chasing anyone. I was only running away. “I remember telling myself, ‘What you’re chasing is an empty pavement,'” she explained. It debuted at number two on the UK’s Official Singles Chart in January 2008. It peaked at No. 21 on America’s Billboard Hot 100 in February 2009.

Adele has had three No. 1 songs in the United Kingdom—”Someone Like You,” “Hello,” and “Easy On Me”—as well as five No. 1 hits in the United States. Her number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 are:

  • “Rolling in the Deep”
  • “Someone Like You”
  • “Set Fire to the Rain”
  • “Hello”
  • “Easy On Me”

Many of Adele’s ballads were inspired by her love life. She penned “Rolling in the Deep,” her first No. 1 Billboard song from May 2011, the day after ending her “first real relationship,” which she subsequently stated “made me an adult.” Similarly, “Someone Like You” was written to assist her recover from a split, apparently with Alex Sturrock, a 31-year-old photographer. However, not all of these songs fit that template. During a live event, the British singer stated that she was inspired to write “Set Fire to the Rain” after her lighter quit working in the rain.

“Hello” stands out because to its accompanying video clip and historical popularity. It was supposedly the first music video to be shot with IMAX cameras, directed by Xavier Dolan, an emerging filmmaker. The song was also the first single to reach over a million downloads in a week.

Adele has had 19 singles in the UK Top 75 and 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, with eight of them reaching the top ten.

Adele made history in 2017 by winning the top three Grammy awards twice. “Hello” won Song and Record of the Year, while 25 received Album of the Year. Adele also won Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, extending her total for the year to five Grammys. However, she was effusive in her appreciation for fellow Album of the Year nominee Beyoncé and her landmark album, Lemonade.Adele praised Beyoncé and her Lemonade album during her victory speech.

In September 2023, suspicion arose that Adele and Paul had married when the singer addressed him as “my husband” during an engagement with fans at one of her concerts.
