8 Scholarships in Europe Open to Non-EU International Students

To attract students from outside Europe, the governments of EU/EEA member nations, as well as a number of European universities, offer tuition fee discounts or scholarship programs to non-EU international students. HowAfrica ranks the top eight scholarships in Europe for non-EU students.

1. NL Scholarship for Non-EU/EEA Students, Netherlands

The NL Scholarships, formerly the Holland Scholarship, are funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science and are intended for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who wish to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree at one of the Dutch research universities or universities of applied sciences in Holland. The scholarship amounts to €5,000.

2. Leiden University Excellence Scholarships, Netherlands

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to exceptional non-EU/EEA students pursuing any MA, MSc, or LL.M program at Leiden University. Scholarships are awarded in the following amounts: €10,000 of the tuition charge, €15,000 of the tuition fee, or the complete tuition fee minus the home fee.

3. University of Maastricht High Potential Scholarships, Netherlands

Maastricht University (UM) provides UM High Potential Scholarships to excellent students from outside the EEA who wish to attend a UM master’s or graduate degree for professionals, with the exception of the School of Business and Economics. The scholarships cover the tuition, monthly living expenses, insurance, and visa fees.

4. Radboud University Scholarship Programme, Netherlands

The Radboud Scholarship Programme provides scholarships to a chosen number of bright potential non-EEA students to undertake a full English-taught Master’s degree program at Radboud University Nijmegen. The scholarship consists of a partial tuition waiver, which waives the tuition charge up to the level of an EEA student. Furthermore, the Radboud Scholarship covers expenditures for visas, residency permits, health insurance, and liability insurance.

5. Danish Government Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students, Denmark

The Danish Ministry of Education offers a number of scholarships each year to highly qualified and motivated international students from outside the EU/EEA who aspire to attend full-degree higher education programs at participating Danish universities. The scholarship might be in the form of full or partial tuition exemptions, as well as grants to cover living expenses.

6. Chalmers IPOET Scholarships, Sweden

Chalmers will give about 50 IPOET scholarships to potential fee-paying students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to pursue any Masters Degree Programme offered by the University. The scholarship grants a 75% tuition reduction for four semesters (two years).

7. University of Oulu Scholarships, Finland

The University of Oulu International Scholarship Scheme provides scholarships to academically talented international students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees at the University of Oulu. The scholarships will take the form of tuition fee waivers, covering 50%, 75%, or 100% of tuition.

8. Lund University Global Scholarships, Sweden

The Lund University Global Scholarship Programme is intended for outstanding academic students who are citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) who are pursuing a Masters Degree Program at the University. Scholarships might pay 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of tuition expenses. The living expenses are not covered.
