According to local media, at least 20 people were shot and injured late Saturday at a Sweet 16 birthday party in the southern US state of Alabama.

Early Sunday, WRBL reported heavy police activity and crime scene tape surrounding a building in Dadeville, Alabama, where white sheets could be seen covering parts of the floor.

Although law enforcement has not publicly confirmed any injuries or fatalities, local media and witnesses have reported that several injured people, the majority of whom were teenagers, were transported to local hospitals for medical attention.

According to WRBL, police and sheriff’s office investigators suspected that an altercation led to the shooting at a teen’s birthday party at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday (0330 GMT Sunday) during a preliminary investigation.

The United States, a country of about 330 million people, has approximately 400 million guns, and deadly mass shootings are common.

Police confirmed late Saturday that two people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, where a gunman slaughtered five people at a bank last Monday.
