Sarah Simpkins, 102, has fulfilled her aim of acquiring a college degree after just graduating from Brightpoint Community College’s Early Childhood Education program in Chester, Virginia.
More importantly, she graduated beside her proud granddaughter, Halimah Shepherd-Crawford.
“I can’t even express my emotions right now,” Halimah told WLBT. “It all started with a concept, and now we’re here. And I’m just so happy for my grandmother because she got what she wanted.”
“I feel very wild,” Ms. Sarah explained. “I am extremely grateful to God for allowing me to do whatever I do. “Thank you, God.”
Simpkins has always wanted to go back to college. She initially attended Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, but dropped out when she became pregnant at the age of 20.
Ms. Sarah prioritized raising her family and had 12 children, yet she never gave up on her dream.
“It’s something I had to do,” Simpkins explained. “I’m very, very grateful that God has enabled me to do this.”
