A $20,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Westport college student by Charter Communications.

Joseph Diaz-Ordonez, a finance student at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, is one of 20 scholarship recipients in the Stamford-based telecommunications firm’s 2023 Spectrum Scholars program.

Diaz-Ordonez, a Staples High School graduate, will also be partnered with a Charter mentor and will be able to intern at one of the company’s corporate offices.

Charter awarded a total of $400,000 this year for the 20 scholarship recipients to use during their junior and senior years of college.

According to a business statement, the grantees, chosen by Charter officials from more than 800 applicants, had to be rising college juniors with financial need who identified as Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and/or Native American.

Diaz-Ordonez, in the company statement, said the scholarship “will significantly contribute to the achievement of my career and future goals.”
