US Star Megan Rapinoe Injured Minutes Into Final Career Game

Megan Rapinoe limped out of the final game of her illustrious career on Saturday after suffering an apparent ankle injury less than three minutes into the National Women’s Soccer League Final.

When Rapinoe collapsed on the field, no other players were near her, and the stunned crowd at Snapdragon Stadium held their breath as medical personnel responded to her.

After many minutes, the heartbroken OL Reign star staggered off the field, with fans giving her a standing ovation when Bethany Balcer took her place.

The 38-year-old American had said the game was “really the last one” in a career that featured World Cup wins in 2015 and 2019 as well as Olympic gold in London in 2012.

Rapinoe, who has been recognized for both her on-field and off-field advocacy, revealed earlier this year that this would be her final season.

The 2019 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year finished her 17-year international career with 63 goals and 203 caps. She played her final international game in September.
