This Couple’s Cookie Business Made ‘Oprah’s Favorite Things’ List Within Months of Opening Storefront

Cookie Society, a gourmet firm based in North Texas, was founded by Marissa and Jeff Allen. Marissa and Jeff visited a prominent bakery in New York City in 2017 and tasted what they thought to be one of the nicest cookies they had ever experienced.

Jeff was inspired by the encounter and asked Marissa if she could make the cookie at home. Marissa, who had a passion for baking and maintained a food blog, chose to develop her own unique cookie instead, despite the fact that she couldn’t precisely recreate the same recipe.

Marissa’s path to perfection entailed trying with several ways until she obtained the ideal outcome. Her banana pudding cookie became a favorite of her husband, Jeff, and sparked the concept for Cookie Society.

She claimed that her husband, an offensive lineman for the Houston Texans of the National Football League at the time, would offer the cookie to his teammates.

“At the time, I looked online, and no one had ever made a banana pudding cookie,” Jeff said to Fox Business. “It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever eaten.”

Marissa continued to explore deeper and broaden her cookie repertoire after the success and favorable feedback from her unique cookies. This eventually led to the creation of the Cookie Society in 2018, which initially offered a menu of six cookie options. Marissa’s major goal was to ensure that each cookie was of the highest quality.

Over the past five years, the Cookie Society has dramatically extended its services, and it now offers over 70 distinct types of cookies. This expansion demonstrates their dedication to providing a diverse choice of great options to their clients.

The Cookie Society’s success has allowed them to transport their cookies nationwide, catering to consumers from all over the country. They also got the opportunity to distribute cookies to Oprah Winfrey during the pandemic, demonstrating the global recognition and demand for their products.

After Jeff retired from professional football, the couple announced plans to open their first physical store in Frisco, Texas, in early 2020. However, their ambitions were thwarted when the COVID-19 epidemic struck just days before their intended store opening. Despite this setback, the pair persevered and continued to focus on building their business while adapting to the pandemic’s problems.

“We would line up in front of the building and just run to cars,” Marissa told DFWChild. “We would walk up and say, ‘Are you here for cookies?’ We’re pointing at our shirt and at the building because their windows are up,” Marissa shared.

It was during this period that Oprah called them. Marissa told DFWChild, “It was incredibly exciting. At first, we thought it was a hoax because the email was one line. And I was like, ‘How would they find me? How do they know?’ And [the Oprah representative] said, ‘Put me in contact with your PR.’ I was like, ‘Should I create another email address so I look like I have PR?” Because we weren’t as big as she thinks!”

After being considered for ‘Oprah’s Favorite Things,’ the couple’s cookies appeared on the famous list within six months of establishing their first boutique, according to Fox Business.

Marissa added that she and her husband, Jeff, work together to run the firm. While she handles internal operations, Jeff handles external operations. They have now successfully launched two stores in North Texas.

Looking ahead, the Allens have ambitious expansion plans and hope to become Texas’ go-to cookie destination. They intend to position themselves as the state’s foremost “cookie” brand, expanding their operations and pleasing customers with their delectable creations.
