Theresa A. Doby: Black Woman Earns Two Doctorate Degrees in One Year

Theresa A. Doby is a distinguished scholar from Chicago, Illinois, whose remarkable academic achievement is a tribute to her persistent perseverance and dedication. Overcoming obstacles in her personal and financial life, she finished her two postgraduate degrees from Walden University and McCormick Theological Seminary in six years, earning a rare double doctorate.

Theresa has had an incredible scholastic career characterized by commitment, tenacity, and academic distinction. She overcame personal hardships and the expensive cost of higher education in the United States to achieve an amazing feat: she pursued two different doctorates at the same time. Theresa received her Doctor of Ministry (DMin) from McCormick Theological Seminary and her Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) from Walden University. She attended two vibrant graduation ceremonies while wearing two different doctoral robes with three stripes on them.

There were difficulties in achieving this outstanding accomplishment. Theresa finished two dissertations (one for each course) with distinction and gave six successful defenses of her work in front of two different committees made up of subject-matter experts. Her grasp and comprehension of the subjects were proven by her ability to perform well under duress and express her studies.

Theresa endured emotional struggles in addition to her academic difficulties, such as the devastating loss of two close friends and a family member within a six-year period. Even after experiencing these devastating setbacks, she persisted in striving for academic success. Theresa had to work summer jobs and frequently relied on just one subway meal a day to pay for her studies, which put further strain on her determination due to financial difficulties.

Theresa’s story inspires us with her unwavering resilience and determination in the face of financial hardships, personal obstacles, and heavy coursework. Her narrative offers hope to everyone who is working toward their academic objectives.

Theresa expressed her gratitude, saying, “I would be remiss if I fail to acknowledge those who extended their arms to support me when I was in my lowest moments. I’d like to thank my family for their unwavering support, as well as my friends for their regular reassurances. Special thanks to everyone who was there for me when I was driving through the roughest roads in my life. Finally, I’d like to thank God Almighty himself for his love and protection throughout my voyage.”
