Russian Military Jet Crashes Into Sea Off Crimea

A Russian military plane crashed into the water off Ukraine’s occupied Crimean peninsula on Thursday, according to the governor of Sevastopol, who was placed by Moscow.

“A military plane has fallen into the sea,” Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote in a Telegram post, without specifying the cause.

Social media footage showed a jet in flames plummeting from the sky.

Sevastopol, the historic headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, is located on the southern tip of Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula acquired by Moscow in 2014.

Throughout the two-year conflict, the region has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces.

“The pilot has ejected. The Sevastopol Rescue Service rescued him up 200 metres from the coast. “His life is not in danger,” Razvozhayev said.

Other footage appeared to show the pilot descending in a parachute after ejecting.
