Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met with the family of a victim of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, over the weekend.
In a video released on X (previously Twitter), the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wished “Happy Birthday” to the sister of Irma Garcia, a schoolteacher who died in the 2022 tragedy.
Garcia was among 21 persons killed when an 18-year-old shooter opened fire at the school on May 24, 2022. The wife and mother of four had worked as a teacher for 23 years before her death.
In the video, uploaded by Garcia’s nephew, John Martinez, Meghan, 42, holds a birthday cake while surrounded by family, with Harry, 39, standing behind her.
The family then joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Garcia’s sister, who stood in front of Meghan.
Martinez told CNN that Meghan surprised Garcia’s sister with the birthday cake.
Martinez shared a photo on X of the Duchess of Sussex posing with Garcia’s two daughters during her visit.
Martinez’s other images show him and Meghan speaking outdoors. He also posed for a shot with Harry and Meghan as she was holding a bouquet of roses indoors.
Martinez captioned the photos: “MEGHAN MARKLE AND PRINCE HARRY CAME TO MY HOUSE!?!?!?! They’re such a kind pair, and I’m so grateful they came to check on the family.”
Martinez told CNN of the royal visit: “It was such a beautiful experience, they’re so nice and compassionate, very down to earth, humble people.”
“It was kind of by surprise, [Meghan] had called my mom one random day and dropped the news on us not too long ago that she was coming to visit the kids and of course we got so excited,” he told the news source.
