Meet Cheryl A. Swanier, An Associate Professor of Computer Science

Cheryl A Swanier


Dr. Cheryl A. Swanier is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Claflin University and the Henry N. and Alice Carson Tisdale Endowed Professor. Her primary areas of study are human-computer interaction and visual programming. Dr. Swanier earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Albany State University in 1986 and a Ph.D in Computer Science from Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in 2015.


Dr. Swanier began her career at IBM as a Programmer Analyst in 1988 before moving on to TSYS as a Lead Quality Analyst in 1993. Dr. Swanier was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Fort Valley State University from 2008 to 2016. She is currently a computer science instructor at Claflin University.

Through outreach activities, Dr. Swanier promotes computer science education. One of these initiatives, the ARTSI Alliance (Advancing Robotics, Technology for Societal Impact), seeks to expand computer science learning at all levels. The STARS (Students & Technology in Academia, Research & Service) Alliance is another initiative that is a regional collaboration between academia, industry, K-12, and community organizations. The program emphasizes community service, student leadership, and career development.

Dr. Swanier is a member of the NCWIT Academic Alliance and an NCWIT Pacesetter. She works as a mentor with undergraduate students and gives lectures to help them learn about research opportunities, internships, and graduate school opportunities. Swanier received a $10,000 Seed Fund Award from NCWIT for her Kewl Girlz Kode summer learning program in 2016-17.

Her dedication to expanding access to computer science education earned her the White House Champion of Change for Tech Inclusion Award in 2013. In the December-January 2013-14 issue of Ebony Magazine, she was named one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans.
