Hamburg Police Shoot Man With Axe At Euro 2024

A man who threatened police with an axe and a Molotov cocktail before a Euro 2024 tournament in Hamburg on Sunday was shot and injured, according to German authorities.

According to police, the event prompted a “major operation” in the city’s St Pauli neighborhood, as reported on X, formerly Twitter.

“The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment,” they added.

According to a police spokesman, there was no indication that the incident was related to the Euro 2024 match between Poland and the Netherlands, which took place later on Sunday.

The attacker “came out of a pub with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail and threatened the police,” according to the spokeswoman. The suspect was shot in the leg.

The incident occurred near the Reeperbahn station, more than a kilometre from the city’s approved fan zone.
