Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas Biography: Inside The Life Of American Singer



Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas is a singer, songwriter, and actress from the United States. Douglas was born in Glen Gove, New York, on October 13, 1980, to Tina Douglas, a former dance teacher, and Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, a former singer. Kenashia “Shia” Douglas, her younger sister, is also a model. Her mother named her Ashanti after the Ghanaian Ashanti Empire. During the 1960s, Douglas’ grandfather, James Douglas, was a Civil Rights activist alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Ashanti Douglas was introduced to music at a young age while growing up. Her mother discovered her musical abilities when she was 12 years old after hearing her sing Mary J. Blige’s “Reminisce.”

Douglas began writing songs and performing in local talent shows while in high school. Early in her career, she was rejected by the Jive and Bad Boy record labels. Despite the setback, she kept performing in New York City. When she met Murder Inc founder Irving Domingo “Irv Gotti” Lorenzo Jr., she got her big break. He noticed her vocal abilities and asked her to write hooks for rap artists and perform duets with them.

Douglas collaborated with a wide range of hip-hop artists, including Christoper “Big Pun” Lee Rios, Joseph Antonio “Fat Joe” Cartagena, Jeffery Bruce “Ja Rule” Atkins, and others. In 2001, she signed with Irv Gotti’s record label, Murder Inc Records. Ashanti, her self-titled debut album, was released the following year, in 2002. The album sold three million copies and was certified triple platinum. It featured the singles “Foolish,” “Happy,” and “Baby.” In 2003, she received three Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary R&B Album for that album.

Ashanti’s second album, Chapter II, was released in 2003 and featured the singles “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby),” “Rain on Me,” and “Breakup 2 Makeup.” That album was certified platinum after selling a million copies. The album was also nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Contemporary Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song.

During her career, Douglas released several albums, including Concerce Rose (2004), The Declaration (2008), and Braveheart (2010). (2014). Douglas also appeared in films such as Bride and Prejudice (2004), The Mupputs’ Wizard of Oz (2005), Coach Carter (2005), John Tucker Must Die (2006), Resident Evil Extinction (2007), Stuck (2015), and Mothers and Daughters (2016). (2016). Douglas was previously involved with rapper Cornell Iral “Nelly” Haynes Jr. The couple divorced in 2014. Douglas is still active in the music industry in 2022.
