Primary education, secondary education, further education, and higher education are the four major components of the UK education system. Children in the United Kingdom are required by law to attend primary and secondary school from the age of five until they reach the age of sixteen.
The education system in the United Kingdom is also divided into “key stages,” which are as follows:
- Key Stage 1: 5 to 7 years old
- Key Stage 2: 7 to 11 years old
- Key Stage 3: 11 to 14 years old
- Key Stage 4: 14 to 16 years old
In general, students will complete key stages 1 and 2 in primary school before moving on to secondary school to complete key stages 3 and 4.
At the end of each stage, students are evaluated. The most critical assessment occurs when students reach the age of 16, when they take their GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education). After completing their GCSEs, students have the option of continuing their education and potentially pursuing higher education, or finishing school and entering the workforce.

Primary Education

Secondary Education
From the ages of 11 to 16, students will enter secondary school for key stages three and four and begin their journey towards GCSEs – learn more about secondary education in the UK and what it entails. In the United Kingdom, primary and secondary education are compulsory; education after the age of 16 is optional.
Further Education
After completing secondary school, students can continue their education by taking A-Levels, GNVQs, BTECs, or other similar degrees. Students in the United Kingdom who intend to attend college or university must finish further schooling.
Higher Education
This is perhaps the most significant section of the site because it teaches more about the UK higher education system and how it operates for overseas students. The majority of overseas students will enter the UK higher education system directly after completing their home country’s equivalent to the UK’s “further education.”
