4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattle New York

A tiny earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck New York City on Friday, with the epicenter in nearby New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey.

There were no preliminary reports of injuries or damage.

An AFP correspondent observed that buildings in Brooklyn shook, rattling cupboard doors and fixtures.

A Security Council discussion on the situation in Gaza was temporarily halted at the United Nations headquarters in New York as a result of the tremor.

“Is that an earthquake?” said Save the Children representative Janti Soeripto who was speaking at the time.

Social media users reported feeling the earthquake from Philadelphia up to New York and eastward along Long Island.

The iconic Empire State Building reported on its X account: “I AM FINE.”
