On October 31, 2017 Ghana FA reported the passing of ex-Black Stars midfielder, Yakubu Abubakari.
Ghana soccer fans are boisterously voicing their sympathy over the tragic misfortune.
Yakubu Abubakari played for the Black Stars and later climbed to the worldwide scene where he played for Great Mariners, Ajax and Vitesse.
The reason for his passing has not been revealed yet. Ghana FA just educated people in general through a tweet that the soccer legend had passed on in a doctor’s facility in Tema.
“We’re sad to hear the death of former Ghana, Ajax and Vitesse midfielder Abubakar.”
“Our thoughts are with his family. May his soul RIP.”
Another report claims that the deceased died on Tuesday afternoon as the doctors were unable to treat him. He was admitted earlier in the week and was placed on life support.
Not much information has been given pertaining to his health condition, prior to his death.
Yakubu Abubakari was born on 13 December 1981 in a southern Ghanaian city, Tema, where he coincidentally gave up the ghost.
At 17, he joined the former European champions Ajax Amsterdam. Yakubu spent 10 years in Netherland playing for the club. The prominent soccer champ made his debut on Eredivisie league on 19 April 2000 where he played 50 minutes in a 1-1 away draw against FC Den Bosch.
Yakubu finished his first season with only five appearances.
While playing for the Black Stars, he won 16 caps for his home country Ghana. He represented Ghana at every age group from under-17, Under-20 and the Under-23 level. Abubakari was part of their squad in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.
Yakubu was a versatile player as he could also play in defense.
Quoting Wikipedia,
“Yakubu played in an average of 15 league games in the following four years, helping the Amsterdam side to two national championships and the 2002 edition of the Dutch Cup. He spent the 2004-05 campaign on loan to fellow league team Vitesse Arnhem.”
“In the ensuing off-season, Yakubu signed permanently with the latter club for four years, being intermittently used during four seasons and released in the 2009 summer. In early October, he had an unsuccessful trial with TSV 1860 München from Germany.”
During his time in Amsterdam Yakubu Abubakari won two Eredivisie titles in 2002 and 2004, and also played in the Champions League with the Dutch club.
The Ghanaian international star made a total of 89 appearances for Ajax. The dead star played with Vitesse Arnheim for five years.
News of his death will be the latest soccer-related news after the launch of Asamoah Gyan’s Baby Jet airline a week ago. Asamoah took to his Instagram account to share his grief over the loss.
“Rest in peace bro. The first fmidfielder who assisted my first goal for Ghana in 2003. I will never forget this bro.”
The 36-year old has been described as a great person on and off the pitch. He will be missed for his personality and talent.
