Why are South African avocados cheaper in the UK than in SA?

Avocado production in South Africa is export-orientated and primarily aimed at the European market. Some 60 000 metric tons were exported in 2014.

South Africa supplies a good portion of Tesco and Waitrose’s avocado volume, and many South Africans sulk over the fact that “all the best avos get exported to the UK” leaving us picking the green bits from the brown.

But the most unfair part? Our second-rate avos are still more expensive than the UK.
