The incident took place on Friday around 3:30 p.m. when officers responded to a “family trouble” call. According to Deputy Police Chief Andre Anderson, officers responding to the call were told the girl “indicated she wanted to kill herself and she wanted to kill her mom.”
One of the videos shows officers attempting to place the child in a police vehicle. The child refuses to get in the car and can be heard on the video repeatedly saying she wanted her father. At the end of the video an officer, who’s name has not been released, sprays the 9-year-old with pepper spray.
According to Anderson, the child was taken to the hospital and later released.
The mayor of Rochester, Lovely Warren, expressed her disappointment with the officer’s actions at the press release before the video was released.
“I’m very concerned about how this young girl was handled by our police department,” Warren said during the press conference. “It is clear from the video we need to do more in support of our children and families.”
“I can tell you that this video as a mother is not anything you want to see,” she said. “You have to understand compassion and empathy.”
