44-year-old Rajib Thomas started taking in the children in 2007 after meeting a HIV-positive young girl who asked him for food. He could not get it the same day but returned the following day. Sadly, the girl had already passed away.
The incident affected him deeply and after speaking to his wife Mini Reji, they moved into a bigger house and started adopting abandoned toddlers from hospitals. Ten years later, they now have 22 kids, in addition to their own biological two.
Rajib and Mini take care of their children’s nutrition, education and healthcare needs. They say that while it was initially challenging, they gain fulfillment from the fact that they are helping young kids who would otherwise have been homeless.
They also do not see them as a burden but as their own children. Caring for them therefore becomes easy, they add.
