Vice President of Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa Denies Plans To Topple Mugabe

As tension mounts in Zimbabwe for President Mugabe to resign, many have speculated and even endorsed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed the nonagenarian president.

VP Mnangagwa has, however, refuted those claims saying that he would continue to serve under President Robert Mugabe.

VP Mnangagwa claimed those allegations were aimed at creating a discord between him and Mugabe and distracting him from carrying out his duties as the president’s subordinate.

“Do I look like I care? I am not moved by those false allegations. They can continue barking, barking and barking, while I continue working for ZANU-PF and my president,” Mnangagwa said.


This comes on the heels of the Minister Mandi Chimene of Manicaland Provincial affairs who recently called on Mugabe to fire Mnangagwa whom she accused of leading another faction in the ruling ZANU-PF party.

The long-time supporters of Mugabe, the War Veterans lately put an end to their support of the president who is himself a war Veteran. The War Veterans have always expressly stated that their preferred candidate to succeed Mugabe is Emmerson Mnangagwa. They have made it clear that Mnangagwa is the only suitable candidate for the Zimbabwean presidency.


The state-owned herald reported that Mnangagwa yesterday claimed that the allegations give him strength to continue his work as VP. On whether the allegations were true, he said:

That is politics. People will accuse you, but you should continue doing your work. people who discourage will always be there but it will give you strength.

It has been asserted that a different faction in the ruling ZANU-PF party called the Generation 40(G-40) are against an Mnangagwa succession, this group have endorsed First Lady Grace Mugabe to succeed her husband.

Nonetheless, President Mugabe who has expressed his desire to rule Zimbabwe till his last breath has said that his successor will be elected and not hand-picked.
