US, UK Freshly Respond to North Korea – “We have to make sure that it is not just words, and that action is taken”

A statement issued on August 31 by the South Korean Air Force said the US military joined the South Korean army for ” an airspace ban exercise .” The maneuvers were specifically designed ” to respond firmly to the repeated fire of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang and to the development of its nuclear weapons “.

The communique said the maneuver had nothing to do with the annual military maneuvers “Ulchi Freedom Guardian” (UFG). This real ammunition exercise took place in Gangwon province, 150 kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the border between the two Koreas. Two B-1B bombers from the US Guam territory in the Pacific and two F-35B sailors from the Iwakuni base in Japan participated in the exercise alongside four South Korean fighters.

The international community divided …

Although the UN Security Council was unanimous on Tuesday night in condemning the North Korean missile strike, the international community remains divided over its attitude towards North Korea. Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Prime Minister, said the missile shooting of North Korea was a  “grave and unprecedented threat”. For this, the United States and its allies must strengthen   “pressure”  on North Korea.

On Thursday, the United States agreed with the United Kingdom to demand an acceleration of the pace of sanctions against Pyongyang. “We have to make sure that it is not just words, and that action is taken, and China has a special role to play.  It has influence on North Korea, and I think we need to encourage it to exert that influence. ”  Said Theresa May, British Prime Minister.

Japanese news agency Jiji said Japan and its allies want to try to convince Beijing and Moscow not to oppose a new resolution calling for an embargo on North Korean oil purchases.

But China and Russia are considering a diplomatic solution. They are not ready to decide on new sanctions against their North Korean ally.
