On Tuesday, the United States said it would halt for now the issuance of business and tourism visas to Eritrean nationals with immediate effect.
The new restrictions are targeted at four Asian and African nations that have declined to take back citizens who have been deported. The U.S. Embassy in Eritrea said in a statement that there will be “limited exceptions.”
Eritrean authorities have not commented on the situation. The Horn of African nation is a major source of migrants who say they are fleeing forced military conscription.
Cambodia and Sierra Leone also are expected to be affected, though there was no statement on those embassy websites as of Tuesday night.
