Update: Opposition Party, DA Begins Inquiry Into First Lady Grace Mugabe’s Immunity Grant

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will be demanding a parliamentary inquiry into government’s decision to grant Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

Mugabe left the country in the early hours of Sunday morning alongside her husband President Robert Mugabe.

She was facing assault charges after allegedly attacking 20-year-old Gabriella Engles at a Sandton hotel a week ago.

Mugabe has now been granted diplomatic immunity by International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

The DA’s chief whip John Steenhuisen says government and the ministers in question have compromised the country’s integrity.

“It’s obviously unacceptable that the situation is allowed to occur. We believe the minister of police, minister international relations and minister of defence and military veterans need to come to Parliament and account for how the situation allowed to occur.”

Meanwhile, lobby group AfriForum says it will be applying for a review to set aside the decision to grant Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

The group’s Willie Spies says there’s a good chance of the review being successful.

“The application will be to review the decision and to set aside the proclamation giving Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity.”
