She first made headlines when her ‘crime of passion’ story was aired on local news. 21-year-old Wanjiru Kamande is alleged to have stabbed and killed her boyfriend Farid Mohamed 22 times with a kitchen knife, following a cheating accusation after she supposedly went through his phone and found suspicious text messages.
On realizing what she had done, she is reported to have turned the knife on herself but luckily the neighborsare said to have found her in good time and was rushed to hospital. Wanjiru is being held on remand at the prison waiting to have her case tried in court.
Her second time to make headlines was in March when Miss World Kenya – Nyamira County and Miss World Kenya – Siaya County visited the prison on International Women’s Day, and Wanjiru was lucky to pose for a photo with the visiting beauty queens, with the photo making rounds on social media.
Now, here she is again being crowned Miss Langata Prison 2016. She beat 19 other contestants in the pageant which was organized in an effort to support the rehabilitation of the female inmates of the prison.
First runner-up was Tanzanian Tina Martin who is facing drug smuggling charges, while Susan Wairimu, whose case of robbery with violence and murder is yet to be completed came third.
