Ugandan media reports that the young actress, star of the Queen of Katwe film, died of a brain tumor.
The 2016 film Queen of Katwe is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi from a Ugandan slum, who started playing chess at the age of nine, although she never been to school. She then participated in international tournaments. Nikita Pearl played the role of Gloria, a friend of Mutesi.
Nikita Pearl Waligwa was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2016, the director and producer of the film Queen of Katwe had conducted a fundraising operation for her medical evacuation in India. She underwent surgery and underwent radiation therapy to treat the tumor.
In 2017, a new tumor was diagnosed in the girl. She died Saturday evening at the TMR international hospital in Naalya, Kampala.
