Roberto Beristain came into the United States from Mexico Nineteen years ago. He became the owner of Eddie’s Steak Shed in Granger, Indiana, and he has four children with his wife, all of whom were born in the United States.

His wife, Helen Beristain, voted for Donald Trump and even supported his immigration policy to step up deportations. She just didn’t think it would apply to her husband, since he paid taxes, never broke the law, and was a business owner.

“We were for Mr. Trump,” she told CBS affiliate WSBT. “We were very happy he became the president. Whatever he says, he is right. But, like he said, the good people have a chance to become citizens of the United States.”

Although Roberto had been issued a removal order, he was allowed to stay in the country as long as he checked in on a yearly basis with authorities. What’s more, he was working on getting a visa and had even procured a driver’s license.

“What they do is say, ‘OK, if you don’t commit any felonies or any crimes or anything bad — DUI, traffic tickets — then you can proceed with your documents to get your green card and to become a citizen in the United States,” Helen told WSBT. “And that’s what Roberto was doing.”

But during one of his yearly check-ins, Roberto was taken into custody and is being detained in county jail. Helen and their children are able to visit him on Sundays for 30 minutes. He is scheduled for deportation Friday and could be banned from the United States for up to ten years, though they are contesting his deportation.

“I understand when you’re a criminal and you do bad things, you shouldn’t be in the country,” Helen said. “But when you’re a good citizen and you support and you help and you pay taxes and you give jobs to people, you should be able to stay.”
