Donald Trump, Former US president, is at risk of losing his Screen Actors Guild (SAG) membership card over his role in the invasion of the country’s Capitol Hill.
HowAfrica had reported how thousands of demonstrators loyal to Trump invaded the Capitol Hill on January 6 while the certification of Joe Biden was ongoing.
According to AP, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) board met on Tuesday and voted “overwhelming” that Trump may have breached its membership guidelines.
Aside from the Capitol violence, Trump is facing accusations of “sustaining a reckless campaign of misinformation aimed at discrediting and ultimately threatening the safety of journalists, many of whom are SAG-AFTRA members.”
The outgoing president faces expulsion if found guilty of the charges levelled against him by a disciplinary committee constituted to look into the matter.
The board’s move, it was gathered, followed a request by Gabrielle Carteris, the guild’s president, demanding a probe of the president for “attacking values” upheld by the union.
“Donald Trump attacked the values that this union holds most sacred — democracy, truth, respect for our fellow Americans of all races and faiths, and the sanctity of the free press,” Carteris said in a statement.
“There’s a straight line from his wanton disregard for the truth to the attacks on journalists perpetrated by his followers.”
Trump became a member of SAG in 1989 and has since featured in several films and TV series including ‘The Apprentice’, ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’.
The development is coming on the final day of his tenure as US president with the inauguration of Biden, his successor, few hours away.
