African Clubs sometimes don’t get their fair share of spotlight as compared to their European and South American counterparts especially when it comes to the media coverage. The continent has some of the most competitive leagues in the World not to mention CAF competitions like Champions League and Confederations Cup.

5. Al-Merrikh SC- Sudan


Based in Omdurman, Al-Merrikh Sporting Club is one of the Oldest Clubs in Africa. It was founded in the year 1908, less than eight years after the formation of Spanish giants Real Madrid. They play their home games at Al-Merrikh Stadium. The Sudanese Club has won the league 20 times and Sudan Cup 24 times.

4. Espérance Sportive de Tunis


Espérance Sportive de Tunis is Tunisian Club based in Capital Tunis. The Club was formed in 1919. They play their home games at Stade El Menzah. The Club is one of the most successful clubs in the continent of Africa and this is why, they have lifted CAF Champions League twice (1994, 2011), 1 Africa Cup Winners Cup, 1 CAF Super Cup and 1 CAF Cup in continental level. Domestically, they have won 26 League titles, 15 Tunisian Cups and 3 Tunisian Super Cup.

3. TP Mazembe- DR Congo



Lubumbashi based Club is one of the most successful club in Africa at the moment in all angles. They play in the magnificent Stade TP Mazembe which has a capacity of 18,000 . The Club annual revenue is estimated to be €15 Million. They lost 1-0 to InterMilan in 2010 FIFA Club World Cup final.

2. Zamalek Sporting Club –Egypt

It is no surprise that the top two most successful Clubs in Africa come from Egypt. The Country has modern infrastructure when it comes to Sports and teams were founded a long time ago. Zamalek is a force in the continent and beyond. They play their home games at Cairo International Stadium which has a capacity of 75, 000 people.


The Cairo based club was founded in 1911 four years after Al Ahly. The name has changed from Qasr El-Neel Club to  El-Mokhtalat Club in 1913 and then King Farouk Club in 1941. In 1952 they finally settled on Zamalek SC after the famous political revolution.

They have lifted 5 Champions League titles, 3 CAF Super Cups, 1 African Cup Winners’ Cup and 2 Afro-Asian Cups. Domestically Zamalek has won the League 12 times, 25 Egyptian Cups and 2 Egyptian Super Cups.

1. Al Ahly Sporting Club- Egypt

Al Ahly Sporting Club is without a doubt one of the most successful Clubs not only in Africa but in the World. The Club was formed in 1907 as a gathering place for young college students who could use their meeting to discuss ways to fight colonialism.



The Club has won a total of 38 League titles, 35 Egyptian Cups and 9 Egyptian Super Cups. In continental competitions they have lifted a record 8 CAF Champions League trophies, 1 CAF Confederation Cups, 6 CAF Super Cups and 4 African Cup Winners’ Cup.

They have also won a bronze medal in FIFA Club World Cup in the year 2006. They also lifted the defunct Afro-Asian Cup once. In the year 2000, CAF named Al Ahly the “African Club of the Century”. They play their home games at Cairo International Stadium which has seating Capacity of 75, 000 people.
