  1. Whoever wrote this article has clearly not done their research about
Baragwanath. It might be the largest hospital in Africa, it is a hellhole, and a disgusting, filthy mess of inefficiency and lack of care for our very poor people. Here’s some fundamental examples of what I know. Anywhere else in the world, the hospital would
    have been closed down.
    1. The hospital is absolutely filthy – beyond one’s wildest imagination
    2. sick people are left to sleep in corridors for up to 8 hours to be seen by a doctor
    3. Medical equipment doesn’t work and is left to stand for months, years. Thats if the
equipment is In the hospital at all! Baragwanath doesn’t have many machines that
are required to diagnose and/or treat patients
    4. Patients get given a slice of bread at mealtimes
    5. cancer patients wait months to be seen and treated. In many cases, it is too late.
Which person with cancer can wait 6+ months to be treated??
    6. There’s no wifi in the hospital. Doctors must use their personal cellphones to
download reports which can cost them thousands of Rands every month.
Some committed, caring doctors also spend hundreds of Rand each month payIng
for patients’ transport to and from the hospital.
    7. The health dept is fundamentally broke, and doctors fear they won’t get paid.
    8. Toilets are filthy, with no soap now toilet paper. In fact, they are not useable.
To the author of this article, go to the hospital and make an effort to do your research honestl. In fact, you should be disciplined, if not fired for writing such inaccurate information.
    Shame on you!

  2. Bara might not be the most luxurious hospital but is def one of the best! Treating a population of over 3.5 million people is not a joke! I have worked at bara for years as a medical student and the level of expertise from the medical staff of amazing! Doctors are so dedicated to helping people, and unfortunately the demand outweighs the resources and man power, doctors and nurses there work day and night, seeing thousands of patients daily, working beyond normal working hours and give 110% to their patients. The research at bara is brilliant, doctors there dedicate their whole lives to improve their patience wellbeing and advance medical research. If a patients waited 6 months for an operation it is because there are THAT MANY PATIENTS! There is a strenuous waiting list to be operated on by some of the best doctors and surgeon a in the world whom are found at bara. I think people need to not dismiss South African health care based on their once off experience and put it in context with the population, resources and demand! Bara is undoubtedly one of the best teaching hospitals in the world and I’ve seen them advance and improve over the years I was allocated there as a medical student! Thank you for this vote of confidence!!

  3. Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital is certainly one of the World’s best in expert health care , undergraduate and Post graduate health sciences/medical training & health sciences/medical research with world class health professionals. It serves both the poor and is a referral even by private sector for quartenary services especially in rare diseases. I agree on infrastructure there’s a lot still to do , with a state of the Art New Accident and Emegency Unit completed, these concerns will definitely be as historic as the Hope we had to transcend from Apartheid neglect to a New Dawn for South Africa. With a budget of 3 billion ZA rands , I salute all Health workers who remain dedicated to heal, teach and generate medical knowledge for the benefit of the global village of humankind. .
