“The Problems of the Sahel Will Not be Solved by France or the United States”: Tibor Peter Nagy

Tibor Peter Nagy, the US assistant secretary of state for African affairs called on Monday January 27, 2020, Africans to take responsibility for the problems of the Sahel.

“The problems of the Sahel will not be resolved by France or the United States. It is up to the Sahel countries to do so. To roll back terrorists, you need good governance, a return of the state to the space abandoned by the terrorists, providing security, health services, education. You can have as many international partners as you want, in the end it all depends on the will of the countries concerned, “explained Mr. Nagy during a press conference in Khartoum.

The so-called “Monsieur Afrique” has started a series of trips between the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan for the past two weeks.

During his tour, Tibor Nagy also issued a new warning to the South Sudanese leaders. As negotiations between rebel leader Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir skate, the American diplomat called for compromise.

“If they are trying to solve every problem in great detail, who knows when we will have a new government. In Sudan, they had even more complex problems to solve, they decided to put them aside, form a transitional government and manage these blockages during the transition. In South Sudan, they can do the same. Otherwise we will still be at the same point in a year ”.
