The Nile River is Regarded as the longest river in Africa, but only few knows it’s also the longest River in the world, spanning 10 different African countries. The popularity of the  Nile River easily dwarfs other longest Rivers in Africa.Either ways , all the longest  rivers  in Africa have their special peculiarities.  This list hope to lessen the gap in knowledge about other longest rivers in Africa.


1. NILE RIVER, 6,853KM

Regarded as the father of African Rivers by the Britannica Encyclopedia, and the longest river  in  Africa and the World in general. it spans a total of 11 countries namely Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Egypt, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan It arises from two main source namely the Blue Nile and The White Nile. The Blue Nilebegins at Lake Tana, Ethiopia, and joins the White Nile south of Egypt in Khartoum, Sudan. Together, they make up the longest river in the world, The Nile River is the main source of Water in Egypt and Sudan. Its home for some large creatures like the hippopotamus,black Rhinoceros and the Nile Crocodile. most now almost extinct.


The Congo river is also known as the Zaire river,its the deepest river in the world. with deep in excess of over 200metres (720feet). its the 9th longest river in the world and the second longest river in Africa with its measured length being 4,700KM. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo are named after it, just as it was named after a kingdom called KONGO which used to be at its bank,
The Congo river is the most powerful river in Africa in terms of force of water. it flows through the Congo Rainforest which is the second largest Rainforest in the world.Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Angola, Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Cameroon, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda are the countries it flows through.


The major River in West Africa  is The Niger River , flowing through Mali, Nigeria, Benin,Niger and Guinea . Although majority of the river flows through Nigeria and Mali. its the 3rd longest river in Africa. its main tributary is the Benue River. Mungo Park is regarded as the First person to get to the central part of the River Niger. It has a boomerang shape.



The White Nile is a Tributary of the Nile River.its 3,700KM long and flows through 5 countries viz Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, DR Congo. its source is a stream in Southern Burundi


The Zambezi river is the fourth-longest river in Africa, the longest east flowing river in Africa and the largest flowing into the Indian Ocean from Africa. It measures 2,574KM and its found in Zambia but flows  through 8 different countries.The Victoria falls( the largest waterfall in the world) derive its source from the Zambesi River.

The Orange River is the Longest River in South Africa.It arises from Lesotho, Flows through south Africa into the Atlantic ocean .It measures 2200KM and it contributes to south Africa Economy by its usage as a source of hydroelectric power.The river was named by Robert Jacob Gordon after the Dutch Royal House.


The Kasai River is a tributary of the Congo River measuring 2, originates from Angola and serves as the border between Angola and DR Congo.


The Lualaba River flows entirely within the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the greatest river source (headstream) of the Congo River by volume of water. The Lualaba is 1,800 kilometres. its the 8th longest river in Africa.


The Senegal River is a 1,790 km (1,110 mi) long river in West Africa that forms the border between Senegal and Mauritania.

The 10th longest River in Africa is the Limpopo river.its a spiral shaped river measuring 1,750km in length. its the second largest river that flows eastward separating south Africa from Zimbabwe and Botswana.The Limpopo river is a slow flowing river and has over 20 tributaries.In 2013, over 15,000 crocodiles were released into the Limpopo River.
