Tanzania’s Singer Harmonize Has the Support of President Magufuli to Become MP

Tanzania may soon have its own musician turned MP. But unlike Bobi Wine in Uganda, Harmonize in Tanzania supports the government.

President John Magufuli has just approved the musician, whose real name is Rajab Abdul, for a run to a seat in parliament next year.

The president’s support comes as his government continues to ban songs deemed sexually suggestive by other artists.

Mr. Magufuli’s blessing was given after Harmonize entertained him at a rally, reported the Swahili newspaper Mwananchi.

Harmonize’s songs have been spared by the government’s moralistic campaign, although his contemporaries Diamond Platnumz and Rayvanny have been repeatedly summoned by the police and banned at one point from publicly performing their “indecent” songs.

Harmonize recently released a song of praise for President Magufuli, describing him as a diligent leader in rich development.
