Tanzanians with Albinism Granted Asylum in the US

Two Tanzanian sisters living with albinism have been granted asylum in the US due to fear for their lives in Tanzania.

This comes after students from the University Of Southern California Gould School Of Law helped them launch a legal to seek asylum which has been approved. The Citizen reports.

The teenagers, Tindi Mashamba and Bibiana Mashamba were born with albinism. The two had been staying in the US since last year using a visa.

The two were attacked in Mwanza region in 2009. Bibiana who was 10 years then had her right leg and two fingers of the right arm chopped off while her sister managed to escape the attack.

The two were flown to the US to enable Bibiana be fitted with a prosthetic limb and fingers after they were rescued by the country’s former MP Al-Shaynaa Kwegyir.

People living with albinism have suffered attacks in Tanzania and other African nations. Several people hold superstitious beliefs that their body parts can be used to get wealth or bring about good luck.
